The project

The CCLME ECO-GIS Viewer is a Geographic Information System (GIS) dynamic analytic tool aimed to create meaningful data products at the West African regional scale, adding value to raw data and producing new scientific knowledge of the ocean and coastal areas of the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME) countries.

The analysis of the data using the CCLME ECO-GIS Viewer facilitates the study of the dynamics and trends of a multiplicity of variables to produce new and valuable information on changes produced during the last 35 years in this region, from climatic changes to shifts in species due to natural and human induced factors.

The Canary Current LME is a major upwelling region off the coast of Northwest Africa. It extends southwards from the Canary Islands (Spain) and the Atlantic coast of Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau and Gambia, but Cabo Verde and the waters of Guinea are considered adjacent areas within the zone of influence of the CCLME.

The CCLME ECO-GIS Viewer has been developed within the framework of the project “Enhancing oceanography capacities on CCLME Western African countries Phase II”. This project has been undertaken by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), and it has been funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). The IOC (UNESCO) partner for this project is the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), which hosts the CCLME ECO-GIS Viewer in their servers.

About oceanographic transects tool

How to use this tool

The data used in this tool come from Environmental Marine Information System (EMIS/European Commision) and made freely available from wms services.

The EMIS WMS is accessible in 2 dataset resolutions (4km or 2km) for several sensors at the Pan-European scale.

The Marine Geoportal EMIS relies on biological and physical variables generated from both hydrodynamic models and satellite remote sensing. In the CCLME ECO-GIS Viewer only Sea Surface Temperature (ºC) and Chlorophyll concentration (mg.m^-3) are used

• Sea surface temperature is the temperature of the water close to the sea surface. SST is a standard product from satellite-based thermal infra-red sensors, and optical sensors complemented with infrared bands.

• Chlorophyll is a photosynthetic pigment commonly present in all phytoplankton species. It is used as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass. Chlorophyll concentration is a standard product from satellite-based optical sensors, usually retrieved from empirical algorithms using reflectance ratios at two or more wavebands.

In order to get the information selected by the user in these wms, and solve the problems with the CORS-domain, a web service was developed and stored in the IEO server.

This functionality allow to create transversal profiles showing in the y axis the oceanographic parameter selected by the user. The data used in this tool come from Environmental Marine Information System (EMIS/European Commision) and made freely available from wms services.

When the user access to this functionality the map region display the Select Layer panel.

From this panel it is possible select the oceanographic parameter (now only is available the Sea Surface Temperture and Chlorophyll concentration datasets, in a future new parameters will be added), the month and the year of the dataset over which the user wants get the information to create the profile.

Clicking the Draw Profile button the draw tool is activated. With the left mouse button, the user can draw a line adding vertices with each click. Double click will end the line and the geometry drawn is sent to the geoprocessing service

A popup is opened in order to inform about long processing time (more than 2 minutes)

When the process finish the profile is showed below the map. If the user move the mouse over the graph the position is indicated on the map.

The profile only show ocean information. If the user draw a line over land this information not is showed in the profile.
